Boggarts
A Boggart, also called a bogeyman or a bugbear, is a creature that abducts children from their beds. It isn't very physically strong but has the unique ability to appear to each person as a personification of their own greatest fear. This causes an effect like paralysis in most people. They tend to sneak into houses through open doors and windows. They then hide in closets or under beds until nightfall, where they spirit away children without a trace. They can't be directly killed but there are a few methods to neutralize one.
-
A Boggart appears to each person as their greatest fear. Including itself. If you can trick a boggart into looking at a mirror it will be horrified by its own reflection, effectively paralyzing it until the mirror is blocked.
-
A dream catcher above a child's bed will protect them from a boggart. As well as nightly checks under their bed and in their closet. DO NOT laugh it off if the child says something is there. Always check and be sure to lock your doors and windows at night.
-
If you can manage to make a boggart touch a dream catcher it will act as a sort of net, trapping the boggart inside of the dream catcher. The dream catcher should then be burned.
-
Iron has a minor effect on boggarts. Not as strong as on a fairy but enough that iron bullets will cause it enough pain to repel it.
My notes and thoughts:
Keeping a dream catcher above all your windows and doors could theoretically keep boggarts from entering your home, as they won't go anywhere near one hanging above a bed.
The reason they take children is unknown. But no Boggart has ever been reported to have a family, nor can they even reproduce. Any Boggart seeing another Boggart would be terrified. Yet they haven't gone extinct. I find it entirely possible that the children are somehow transformed into boggarts when taken.
Wearing reflective sunglasses might have the effect of immunizing you to the boggart, or even cause it to see its own reflection in the lenses. However, since they hunt at night wearing sunglasses is very impractical.
